For five years Future Terrains has delivered a 16-hour masters lecture course to introduce and explore the environmental and community aspects of the international mining industry, with a focus on international best practice in environmental and social management, and environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs), to a curriculum developed by Future Terrains too.
The course is delivered every Autumn to up to 80 masters students in mining engineering, mineral processing and geology at the University of Exeter’s Camborne School of Mines. Backed up and illustrated by contemporary examples from Future Terrains work portfolio, it uses a range of historic and contemporary examples of both good and poor industry practice and also features UK and local projects.
The finale of the course is a half-day poster presentation of the students’ assignments in which, in teams, they research and present a specific example of a mining project with an interesting mining-sustainability story to tell.
