Almost four years in the making, Future Terrains is proud to announce the publication of the new, not-for-profit book, 102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground, by the Eden Project. From reinventing coal mining regions to regenerating communities and rebuilding ecosystems, this beautifully illustrated collection of stories explores the fascinating and sometimes surprising world of post-mining projects, places and people.
Written by Future Terrains’ Pete Whitbread-Abrutat and Eden’s Rob Lowe, 102 Things is a beautiful, photo-led book that presents over 100 inspiring ways to re-purpose mine sites and rejuvenate mining communities by rebuilding ecological integrity and enhancing people’s lives – from creating new wildlife sanctuaries, generating and storing renewable energy, adrenaline-fuelled recreation and adventure, re-using mine water, economic diversification, social transition and catalysing new cultural opportunities – and more.
102 Things’ stories relate success in mine closure and post-mining regeneration from around the world, underpinned by creativity, innovation and collaboration, and reflecting the wide and diverse range of organisations, groups and people involved. The overriding aim is to inspire and, hopefully, motivate improved practice in this field.
The book is the sequel to the successful 2009 Eden book, 101 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground, which sold thousands of copies around the world in four languages, but is no longer available. The production of 102 Things was sponsored by Rio Tinto, Anglo American, BHP and Newmont, which has allowed the retail price to be kept low to enable the book’s messages to be disseminated to the widest possible audience. 102 Things was supported by ICMM , RESOLVE and the Land Trust, with a foreword written by Greg Radford of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development.
102 Things to Do in a Hole in the Ground by Peter Whitbread-Abrutat and Robert Lowe is priced at £14.99 and is published by the Eden Project. Click here for the various options for buying a copy.
