Forest landscape restoration after mountaintop removal coal mining; USA

While Exploring World Class Landscape Restoration for his Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Travelling Fellowship, Pete researched the context, challenges, motivations and research of the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative, (ARRI) and its allied projects, which is seeking to restore the unique, high biodiversity and culturally-significant, temperate forests of Appalachia after extensive denudation by surface coal mining on a vast scale – particularly after mountaintop removal coal mining.

He discussed the work of the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative with national and state government officials, university researchers and members of local communities to aid understanding of the project drivers from different perspectives. Several field visits to operating and post-mining sites were made to investigate the different technical aspects of the restoration under way, including informal visits to mining communities. Overall conclusions can be found in the report Exploring World Class Landscape Restoration, available here.
